upcoming presidential elections... food for thought.
“I have clearly stated my belief that gays and lesbians are our brothers and sisters and should be provided the respect, dignity, and rights of all other citizens. I have consistently spoken directly to African-American religious leaders about the need to overcome the homophobia that persists in some parts our community so that we can confront issues like HIV/AIDS and broaden the reach of equal rights in this country.
I strongly believe that African Americans and the LGBT community must stand together in the fight for equal rights. And so I strongly disagree with Reverend McClurkin’s views and will continue to fight for these rights as President of the United States to ensure that America is a country that spreads tolerance instead of division.”

thrill the world
last night was my friend jk's learn to dance the thriller party. needless to day, he and his fabulous roommate went to town with costumes and decor. literally, the mj jacket reproduction is made out of electrical tape.
it was a blast - and a great work out. here's some fun from the party. and, by the way, this in no way means i endorse the occult. oh, and for the real thriller, click here.

this is what a big college campus needs.
outdoor classrooms. or pavilions with comfortable seating, outlets for laptops, and wi-fi. how else is a person to work on a gorgeous day? staying inside can be quite stifling.
so, go forth. lobby. make it happen. it will keep students sane.
see? something like this, but with laptop friendly seats. grand idea if you ask me.

poetry and truth.
Pity the nation whose people are sheep,
and whose shepherds mislead them.
Pity the nation whose leaders are liars, whose sages are silenced,
and whose bigots haunt the airwaves.
Pity the nation that raises not its voice,
except to praise conquerors and acclaim the bully as hero
and aims to rule the world with force and by torture.
Pity the nation that knows no other language but its own
and no other culture but its own.
Pity the nation whose breath is money
and sleeps the sleep of the too well fed.
Pity the nation -- oh, pity the people who allow their rights to erode
and their freedoms to be washed away.
My country, tears of thee, sweet land of liberty.

pinky watch 2007.
sad thing is that none of the eggs are fertilized. sadder still, pinky the domesticated turtle, broke them all. she has something to learn by way of grace and gentleness when moving around her clutch. it is possible she may have more; most turtles have 20 or more. so, now begins pinky watch 2007.
up until this summer i never really "bonded" with pinky. she is about seven and dan has had her since she was a hatchling. since, however, we have been sharing a room, pinky and i have made a connection. pinky crawls to me when i call her; she comes out of hiding when i call her. and i am not embarrassed, but, rather, proud to share this information.
will keep you posted on the egg situation.
on a final note, it is no small wonder that a turtle about a foot long produced 12 eggs that were 1.5 to 2 inches in length.

my summer.
on top of which everyone feels mad at me. and not all are saying why. all i can guess is that i have or have not spent enough time with them or other people. i was not able to do what i thought. i made silly mistakes due to stress. harsh judgment on those silly mistakes.
and, work was stressful. saying good-bye to people, important people, with all of the surrounding issues, is long and hard and stressful.
this leaves me exhausted. physically, emotionally... you name it. class is around a corner and i need a vacation. too bad there is no time or money for one.
would that i could sleep for a week.

4. i cannot stand the view. never have, never will.
5. i would rather the muppets have another show.

mammograms.
please make sure, if you are 35, you have a baseline.
mammograms are so important - and they are lifesavers.

lebanon.
i have not been to lebanon, but i have always wanted to go. and i came about this close to going about seven months before the war last summer. amazing people. beautiful. resilient. what else is there to do when the your land is constantly at war, both with itself and with others. just check out the controversy around the world press photo of the year here.
it's only been nine months, but already i am a law geek.
yes. i am a law geek. and i am proud.

closer to the death of choice.
the supreme court's decision today in Gonzales v. Carhart takes this country closer and closer to becoming one that prohibits choice for more than half the population, a scant thirty years after it awarded what may be considered limited choice to women. it is the single biggest choice decision to be handed down since Roe v. Wade.

this is the funniest thing i have seen in a long while.
as someone said, "Pearl was fantastic... but that guy with the afro was a bit lacking."
we all need someone, just one person, who challenges us.
hope you find someone.

looking for idenity of interests.
i went to the journal of international law, which would be my number two choice after the law review.
i found someone interested in international development and had an exciting conversation with someone for the first time in months. it was a relief to talk to someone who understood and was interested in the same things.
too bad i then proceeded to talk his head off.
i miss my peeps. :(

the difference between me and the rural midwest
she walked into the lunchroom where she worked.
she heard a woman say, "i like the discovery channel, but it is too evolutionary for me."
my friend walked out without saying anything, which i told her was probably best under the circumstances.
now, i am not knocking god or religion. but i miss similarity of thought, people who care about things that are similar to what i care about, and experience in life. i miss people who want to travel the world and taste the delights it has to offer. i miss museums and theatre. most of all, i miss those who are near and dear to me and get me. you can never underestimate how important that identity is - that someone gets you.

the pollen count is high?
it reminds me of when i lived in texas and the weather would report on windchill factors when it was 60 degrees outside. (it was 55 with the windchill factor.) i'm from chicago. 5 below zero with a windchill factor that makes it 30 below zero is a windchill factor.
oi. back to class actions...

chi-town bound.
yes. this summer, after a many year departure, i will be living and working in the greater chicagoland area. i am still looking for a friend or relative to take in the poor, wayward law student that i am. but either way, i am looking forward to a summer with my family. it has been entirely too long.

and three cheers for the dixie chicks. winning song of the year and record of the year and album of the year... as far as i am concerned a nice f*** you to those who do not believe in free speech.
Not only is it extremely cruel to persecute in this brief life those who do not think the way we do, but I do not know if it might be too presumptuous to declare their eternal damnation. Evelyn Beatrice Hall

someone needs to explain this to me.
chicago, oh that paragon of snow removal, please teach michigan the way. chicago, you are brilliant! you plow as it is snowing. there is no accumulation. snow is constantly removed. salt is constantly laid down on the road. there is no waiting until after the snow, when it is already packed onto the pavement and there is no such thing as removal. please, send michigan your snow removal guide. the state is definitely in need.
